Dear Laura,

There are lots of things they can do. You could ask your friends to read, to usher (women can escort the extra grandpa or uncle down the aisle), or to play music if they are performers-and are actually, you know, good. Readings don't have to be religious; your friends could recite anything from a song lyric to dialogue from an apropos scene of 30 Rock. You could also ask your girls to give toasts at the reception, or even be your official wedding witnesses. They can be VIPs at the party without being in the wedding party.
