5 Craziest Movie Role Transformations

Everyone was buzzing when photos of Anne Hathaway's new crop cut hit the web. Known for her thick, long chestnut hair, this came as quite a shock, though it was soon revealed it's for Anne's latest movie role. (She's playing the character Fantine in film version of "Les Miserables.")

This got us thinking about all the other actresses who've changed their appearances for a film (and a better chance at an Oscar …). We rounded up the top five ladies who've gone the distance when it comes to full body transformation.

No. 5 Renee Zellweger

For "Bridget Jones' Diary," Renee Zellweger packed on 28 pounds in just a few months to play the lead role. How? She reportedly ate 4,000 calories a day to get Bridget's famous curves. Though Renee quickly lost the weight, she signed on for the sequel, and had to gain weight again. Now, with a third installment in the works, it sounds like Renee will soon be back on her high-calorie diet …

No. 4: Natalie Portman

While a few actresses have shaved their heads for a film role (think Robin Tunney in "Empire Records" or Demi Moore in "GI Jane"), no one caused quite as much of a stir as Natalie Portman when she took to the sheers in "V for Vendetta." With amazing confidence, Natalie soon took to the red carpet to promote her other film, "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith," shaved head and all.

No. 3: Hilary Swank

In "Boys Don't Cry," Hilary Swank had to transform into a real life person: Brandon Teena, a biological woman who identified as a man, and was beaten, raped, and murdered as a result of his intersexuality. To get into the role, Swank lived as a man for four weeks before even shooting the film. Afterward, she won an Oscar.

No.2: Charlize Theron

Another full body transformation, another Oscar winner. For the movie "Monster," Charlize Theron not only gained 30 pounds, but had her hair professionally damaged, her eyebrows shaved and bleached, wore fake teeth, and underwent hours of makeup to transform into real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos.

No.1: Rooney Mara

Rooney Mara was a relative newcomer to Hollywood when she landed the role of Lisbeth Salander in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." To fully get into the role, Rooney lost weight, shaved her head, dyed what was left black, shaved and bleached her eyebrows, and even had her nipple pierced (yikes). Though the movie tanked at the box office, Rooney became a fashion darling, and was nominated for an Oscar.
