Robert Pattinson survives his first awkward post-cheating scandal interview and red carpet appearance

Robert Pattinson bravely faced his public last night. The British hunk made his first TV appearance since his long-time girlfriend, Kristen Stewart, humiliated him last month after she was caught cheating with a married director. The 26-year-old actor was Jon Stewart’s guest on “The Daily Show” on Monday, and then he hit the red carpet – looking mighty fine, we should add – for the New York premiere of his latest movie “Cosmopolis.”

The “Twilight” star wasn’t exactly at the top of his game for his interview. He appeared awkward, seemed a little strained coming up with answers to questions, and several times just trailed off and didn’t finish his sentence. But he certainly seemed to be in good spirits and played along with the talk show host when Stewart brought out two pints of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream to share while they chatted. "Listen, the last time I had a bad breakup, Ben and Jerry got me through," Stewart joked. "So I thought you and I could bond over this and talk about, 'Boy, you are better off. Kick her to the curb!'"

While no direct mention of Kristen Stewart, 22, was made – and the status of their relationship remains unclear – Pattinson made a joke about the scandal. "My biggest problem in my life is that I'm cheap, and I didn't hire a publicist," he said.

The interview ended on a more serious note with some kind words from Jon Stewart to Pattinson: “Here's my wish for you. I know you're going through some weird business. Get a handle on your business in private. I wish you all the best. You're a nice guy."

After the interview, Pattinson was off to the “Cosmopolis” premiere, which was held at the Museum of Modern Art. He looked tan (perhaps he’s been sunbathing at Reese Witherspoon’s Ojai ranch?) and surprisingly rested on the red carpet. Rocking a little scruff on his face, he was dressed in a blue Gucci suit and accessorized with a black tie.

Although he smiled for the cameras and looked pretty great under the circumstances, one eyewitness told Us Weekly that when the cameras weren’t snapping him, he looked "extremely serious" and "tense."

Soon after the cheating scandal – involving Kristen and her married “Snow White and the Huntsman” director Rupert Sanders – rocked Hollywood, there were reports that Pattinson would not be promoting “Cosmopolis,” in which he plays a Wall Street bloodsucker whose life unravels during a wild limo ride. However, Pattinson has a busy schedule, which included a visit to the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday morning and then an interview on “Good Morning America” on Wednesday.

Pattinson's new flick opens Aug. 17, and he says he hopes his “Twilight” fans will check it out. “If there are any ‘Twilight’ fans tuned in … I genuinely want to make ‘Cosmopolis’ have a higher opening weekend than ‘Dark Knight,’” he said on “The Daily Show." “It’s in six cinemas, so it’s going to be a challenge.”
