NBC cuts Opening Ceremony segment

NBC understandably edited its prime-time broadcast of the London Games' nearly four-hour Opening Ceremony, but one particular omission has left people scratching their heads.

Scottish singer Emeli Sandé performed an appropriately subdued rendition of the hymn "Abide With Me" in remembrance of the 52 victims of the London subway terror attacks, which took place on July 7, 2005, one day after London was awarded the 2012 Summer Olympics.

But for reasons unknown, NBC decided against broadcasting that portion of the Opening Ceremony. Instead, the network aired an interview with Michael Phelps that didn't really amount to anything.

The tribute came right before the parade of nations, which is always one of the more interesting parts of the ceremony. Still, it's strange that NBC would cut such an emotional moment when there was plenty more to trim from Danny Boyle's lavish yet somewhat ridiculous show.

So why did the folks at NBC do it? You'd have to ask them, which some already have, thus far to no avail. And the tribute, which provided a tender pivot to the extravagant proceedings, went unaired in the United States.
