Tom Cruise’s three marriages: the rundown

Tom Cruise might have hoped that the third time would be the charm when it came to everlasting wedded bliss, but alas marriage number three — to actress Katie Holmes — is ending in divorce. Here are the stats on Tom's marriages, all three of which happened to be to celebrities, and all of whom ended up splitting with the actor when they were the same age … 33.

Wife #1: Mimi Rogers
Married: May 1987, when she was 31 and he was 24
Separated: December 1989
Divorced: February 1990
Offspring: none

Why they broke up: Reports vary, with some blaming Cruise's increasing success as a leading man shortly after they tied the knot, thanks to hit films like "Rain Man" and "Born on the Fourth of July." Others have pointed to rumors of fertility troubles and problems in the bedroom. After their divorce, Rogers added fuel to the fire. ''Tom was seriously thinking of becoming a monk," she "joked" to Playboy in 1993. "At least for that period of time, it looked as though marriage wouldn't fit into his overall spiritual need. And he thought he had to be celibate to maintain the purity of his instrument. Therefore it became obvious we had to split."

Did you know?: Rogers was the one who actually introduced Cruise to the Church of Scientology, in which he's still very active. She's since abandoned the religion.

Wife #2: Nicole Kidman
Married: December 1990, when he was 28 and she was 23
Separated: February 2001
Divorced: August 2001
Offspring: The couple adopted two children together: daughter Isabella, now 19, and son, Connor, now 17.

Why they broke up: While some had claimed that the couple's marriage was nothing more than a sham for movie publicity, Kidman has disputed those accusations, telling Vanity Fair in 2002: "He basically swept me off my feet. I fell madly, passionately in love … My whole plan in terms of what I wanted for my life — I was like, 'Forget It.'" But, Kidman discovered — after she eventually got some film leads in her own right — that she had perhaps sacrificed too much. "I realized I could be fulfilled creatively. I tried to deny it because it would have been so much easier for me to be satiated by being a wife. I wish it could have been part of my trajectory, but it wasn't." And then of course, there was that height thing. "Well, I can wear heels now," Kidman snapped on the "Late Show With David Letterman" shortly after the couple's split.

Did you know? Cruise and Kidman met on the set of the drama "Days of Thunder," in which he played a race car driver and Kidman played a neurosurgeon, despite the fact she was only 22 when the movie was shot.

Wife #3: Katie Holmes
Married: November 2006, when he was 44 and she was 27
Separated: June 2012
Divorced: TBD
Offspring: Biological daughter Suri, 6

Why they broke up: The two haven't made any statements, other than through their attorneys asking for privacy, but rumors are swirling, of course, and it's no secret that Katie's career has stalled since marrying the mega-star. RadarOnline, meanwhile, is citing a source who says that not only does the actress want to amp up her career again, but the couple has also butted heads over parenting styles, with Holmes wanting Suri to live a normal childhood at school with other children, and Cruise wanting her to live a more-sheltered, less-disciplined life.

Did you know?: Before even meeting Cruise (who made his first movie when Holmes was just 3 years old), she revealed to Seventeen magazine her childhood dream of becoming the movie star's wife. "I think every little girl dreams about [her wedding]. I used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise." Sadly, she probably didn't dream of the divorce part.
