Cute, Easy Baseball-Hat Styles to Try Now

by Ramona Emerson

I haven't worn a baseball hat since second grade softball, but when I saw them coming down the spring runways (DKNY, Alexander Wang, Catherine Malandrino), I was strangely intrigued. The caps seemed to instantly project an awesome kind of sexy-tomboy aesthetic--and they're a great way to tame puffy summer hair, or hide the fact that you're at the worst stage of a bang grow out (hi!). But how does a non-baseball-hat-wearer rock a hat without looking like she's a) trying too hard or b) next up at bat? Matt Fugate, a hairstylist at Sally Hershberger downtown and ball-cap enthusiast, filled me in:

Mess it up: "If you're going to rock a baseball hat, don't be rocking it with your gorgeous blowout!" he says. "You want it to have an edge and a boyish charm in a feminine way. Anything beachy or messy. You want bedhead hair.'"

Point it right: Cara Delevingne, above, looks great wearing her hat backward. Everyone else, wear it forward, "slightly askew, so it looks a little bit less severe," says Fugate. If your ears stick out, like mine do, Fugate suggests wearing the hat a little further back on the head and tipping it up a little, so you can see the underside of the brim. "This elongates and draws the eyes upward away from the ears," he says.

Do it up:
"I love a cute messy ponytail or braid with a hat," Fugate says. "That cool fishtail braid Blake Lively does would look awesome coming out the back of a baseball hat." (Here's our video on how to create a killer fishtail braid.)

Try instant bangs:
Unexpected hat trick? Fake a fringe. "Pile all the hair on your head, then grab the ends and fan them out over the forehead. Put the hat on and you've got bangs--at least until you take it off." For extra security, Fugate suggests using a bobby pin to secure your new fringe right behind the hairline.
