‘The Great Gatsby’ *finally* brings BFFs DiCaprio and Maguire together

Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire personify the acronym "BFF." (There's even a Facebook page dedicated to it.)

It's no secret the two A-listers have been close friends since they were kids, but they have yet to share significant screen time... until now.

Both besties star in Baz Luhrmann's 3D film version of roaring twenties F. Scott Fitzgerald novel "The Great Gatsby." The first trailer has just been released and DiCaprio-Maguire watchers are probably thinking it's about time.

The film, due out during Christmas this year, stars DiCaprio as the nouveau riche, flashy Jay Gatsby (who, by the way, has a super steamy love scene with Carrie Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan). Maguire plays the narrator of the tale and Daisy's cousin -- Nick Carraway.

While it appears to take place in the decadent twenties, the soundtrack -- with tracks from Kanye West, Jay-Z and Jack White -- and hyper-real visual style Lurhmann is known for ("Moulin Rouge!," 2001) gives a decidedly modern feel to the story.

We haven't seen much of Maguire since 2009's "Brothers" with Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal. The "Spider-Man" and "Seabiscuit" star, now 36, appears ready to reclaim his movie star status.

DiCaprio, 37, and Maguire have actually appeared together once before in a tiny film made in 1995 called "Don's Plum,"about a group of Los Angeles teens who hang out at a local diner. The two were later embroiled in a law suit with the filmmaker over its release -- which has never been out in the U.S.

They also both appeared in "This Boy's Life" in 1993, but DiCaprio was the lead -- along with Robert DeNiro and Ellin Barkin -- and Maguire had a smaller part. "Gatsby," however, is really the first time the two are front and center on the big screen in a significant way.

Maguire and DiCaprio are said to have first met during their audition for the short-lived TV series "Parenthood" -- yes, its first incarnation in the nineties -- based on the 1989 film starring Steve Martin. DiCaprio got the part.

The two eventually formed their larger circle of friends dubbed "The P**** Posse," which included stars Lucas Haas, Kevin Connolly, and magician David Blaine. They were a fraternity of sorts, known for their penchant for women. (And they still hang out: The aforementioned group of guys, minus Blaine, were spotted together at this year's SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, in March.)

Today Maguire is married to Jennifer Meyer and has two children with her. A few models (Gisele Bundchen and Bar Refaeli) and an actress (Blake Lively) later, DiCaprio is still single, and may have some posse years still left in him. He is said to be currently dating model Erin Heatherton.
