Goddess: Celebrity Moms and DadsNeil Patrick Harris introduces his twins to Oprah Winfrey
It was a jam-packed weekend for Neil Patrick Harris and his family! In addition to going on an adventure in the Big Apple, where the actor is preparing to host the Tony Awards, they made their debut on "Oprah's Next Chapter"!
Harris, 38, and his partner David Burtka, 37, love spending time in New York City, but this time it's been a combination of business and pleasure. The "How I Met Your Mother" star will be hosting the 66th annual Tony Awards on Sunday, so he's prepping for the big night and taking in as many shows, including "Newsies" and "Clybourne Park," as possible. But Saturday, NPH enjoyed a fun day out with Burtka and their twins, Gideon and Harper, who will turn 2 in October. The dads enjoyed a pleasant spring outing with their children, who were dressed in yellow-and-white outfits and had on sandals. They hit a park, took a long walk, did some shopping, and Harris even showed them how to hail a New York City cab.
On Sunday, Harris' pre-taped interview with Oprah Winfrey for her "Next Chapter" series aired on OWN. In addition to giving a tour of the toddlers' oh-so-cute room (they have their own teepee!) and introducing Winfrey to the little ones, the dads candidly discussed having a surrogate carry their babies and how they plan to share that information with their kids one day. "The one thing I so appreciate that my parents did is talk to us like we were regular people and didn't talk to us like we were little babies," Harris told Winfrey. "We do the same thing with our kids. We're going to tell them information. We want them to have information. The way that they were brought into this world was very unique and weirdly scientific. The technology involved in it was quite remarkable. But it came because we really, really wanted kids. We really had thought it through financially, emotionally, relationship wise. We didn't accidentally get pregnant and decide that now we need to make this work. These kids came into our world with nothing but love."
Still, Harris admits that being a parent hasn't been easy. "I didn't love the first six, nine months and I struggled with it a lot in therapy," he told Winfrey. "When they're so little and just crying, I didn't know what was wrong. [I'd think] 'I try to soothe you and you're still crying.' [Burtka] is more maternal and much more intuitive with that. So I would pass off [the baby] and then fix the crib or clean the dishes. I'd do work; I wouldn't just vanish… But I didn't feel like I was bonding with them, which is okay because I still feel like my strengths will come when it's like: 'Papa, let's build a fort.' [And me saying:] 'I love forts — let's do that.' Or tell me what's wrong or have a conversation. I think that's where my strengths will be more in the forefront."
As for whether they'll expand their brood, he jokingly told Winfrey, "Oh, don't start with this conversation."
