Sara Errani makes French Open final; let’s learn a little about her

No. 21 seed Sara Errani defeated reigning US Open champion Sam Stosur 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 to advance to the French Open final.Here's a quick primer course to catch you up on all things Sara before Saturday's final.

1. Born April 29, 1987 in Bologna, Italy. She on her first two singles titles in 2008 in Palermo and Portoroz, then went four years before winning another.

2. In a span of two months this March and April, she won more tournaments than she had in her entire career. Those victories in Acapulco, Barcelona and Budapest were all on clay.

3. She had never advanced past the second round of the French Open before this year. In the three other Slams, Errani had never gone past the third round until advancing to the quarterfinals of this year's Australian Open.

4. Errani arrived in Paris ranked No. 24 but was No. 5 in prize money for the year and No. 9 in the Race for the WTA Championships. No matter what happens on Saturday, she will make her debut in the top 10 in next week's rankings.

5. Entering her quarterfinal match against Angelique Kerber, Errani was 0-28 lifetime against players ranked in the top 10. With the win over Stosur, she now has two straight.

6. Only two seeds from outside the top 10 have ever won the French Open. The first was in 1933. The next was two years ago, when Errani's friend and countrywoman, Francesca Schiavone, won as a No. 17 seed.

7. In the past decade, only one player seeded lower than No. 21 had made it to the French Open semifinals. Sam Stosur was No. 30 when she made it in 2009.

8. Errani has never beaten Petra Kvitova, one of her potential finals opponents. She's 0-2 against her. Errani has never played Maria Sharapova.

9. She'll also be playing in the doubles final alongside fellow Italian Roberta Vinci. They lead the WTA Championship race and have won five titles this season. Mary Pierce was the last woman to win both the singles and doubles titles at the French Open.
