EXCLUSIVE: Derek Jeter Talks Cologne, Grooming, and His Unexpected Habit

Derek Jeter revealed the inspiration behind his newly re-launched cologne, Driven Black, to a select group of beauty editors at Yankee Stadium. "You know what, when I was younger I used to wear Cool Water," Jeter admitted. The Davidoff cologne was very popular in the '90s, but the Yankee captain confessed he started wearing Cool Water after Snoop Dogg referenced it in his 1993 song "Lodi Dodi." "It's different [than Cool Water]," Jeter laughed, "but there are some similarities." It's true-both scents have notes of sandalwood, cedar, and citrus.

Jeter typically sprays on cologne before a night out, but he said a few teammates like to load it on pre-game. "Some guys [spray it on] before the game," he said. "You would be surprised. I won't name names, but…" If we had to guess, we'd say A-Rod seems like the type of guy who wears cologne on the field.

Official Yankees fragrances launched earlier this year

The sports star is taking home $16 million this year, but he insists his morning grooming routine is entirely basic. "I take a shower. I'm pretty simple," said Jeter. "I don't really take care of myself like I should. I'm just in and out, quick." He does, however, have one surprising habit. "I'm an ironer. I iron everything." said Jeter. "I learned from my dad. My dad used to iron everything when I was younger and I'm the same way. It's really embarrassing." We'll be sure to look for the crease in his Yankee uniform.

When it comes to the overcrowded celebrity fragrance market, Jeter said he's pleased with Driven and Driven Black, and the idea of launching another seems daunting. "When I did this one years ago, the whole thing was a learning process. Like, I was literally smelling all the different smells. It's a long process." What about creating a perfume for the ladies? "Ooh, I don't know. If women didn't like it… I would be a little hesitant to do that. It sounds like a good idea, but I don't know." With former flames like Minka Kelly, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Mariah Carey, Adriana Lima, and Vanessa Minnillo, it's hard to imagine any woman would find fault with Jeter.
