Should We Worry About Others' Weight Gain During Pregnancy?

As if pregnant women already don't feel self-conscious enough about the changes their bodies are going through and the weight they are gaining; now it appears that people think it is ok to criticize pregnant women about how much weight they've gained. Singer, actress, and fashion designer Jessica Simpson has been lambasted in the media lately about her weight gain during her pregnancy. Regardless of whether or not someone is a public figure, there is only one person that has the right to criticize a pregnant woman's weight gain and it's not any of us.

I have to admit that I was surprised to hear that she has another month to go until her due date because she appears to be big, but I just figured to each their own and besides that, celebrities tend to look totally different in person than they do on screen or in the pages of magazines. By the way, did you see how amazing she looked on the cover of the April issue of Elle? I certainly know plenty of people who have gone nuts on their favorite foods during their pregnancies. Sure, we know that we're supposed to eat healthy and exercise throughout pregnancy, but it's also the only time in our life when we can be a little more lackadaisical and give in to our cravings without being criticized, or so we thought. Many say that pregnant woman should gain no more than 25 pounds during their pregnancy, but everybody is different. I don't think I could have only gained 25 pounds even if I didn't eat for half of each of my pregnancies.

The bottom line is that Simpson's weight gain and how it affects her health is between her and her doctor and is nobody else's business. While it's human nature that people love to hear the latest gossip, whether it be about a celebrity or the person down the road, it would serve us all better to keep our mouths shut rather than hurt someone (particularly someone who already probably isn't feeling all that great about their appearance). I can only imagine how the female authors of some of these articles criticizing Simpson would feel if every time they ate a donut while pregnant it became a headline. So let's leave it up to the medical professionals in this case and in everyone else's case too.
