How Octomom Nadya Suleman Birthed Her Way To The Welfare Line

After promising she'd never rely on government assistance, Nadya Suleman has joined the ranks of 40 million Americans on welfare, TMZ reports.

With more than a dozen kids to rear on her own and several failed attempts to capitalize on her tabloid fame, the so-called Ocotmom has had a bumpy road the last few years.

Here, we retrace how it all unraveled:

Jan. 2009: Suleman catapults into the media spotlight when she gives birth to octuplets via in vitro fertilization–in addition to six she already had. An investigation into her doctor's treatment leads the Medical Board of California to revoke his medical license.

Feb. 2009: Reports start swirling that Suleman is already accepting welfare for three of her eldest children (pre-octuplets) who are disabled.

March 2010: A year after purchasing a swanky La Habra, Calif. pad, Suleman is reportedly on the brink of eviction and struggling to make mortgage payments.

June 2011: In an interview with In Touch, Suleman shows serious signs of wear and tear. "I hate babies," she said. "They disgust me. … Obviously, I love them – but I absolutely wish I had not had them."

Jan. 3, 2012: Her management team dumps her, claiming she canceled a ton of appearances. "Regardless of the $70k we made her, she still claimed to not be able to pay any of her bills," a rep told TMZ. "We no longer wanted a part of any of it and we feel sorry for the children ."

Jan. 2012: The doctor responsible for her in vitro treatments files personal bankruptcy, reportedly owing more than "$20k on his credit cards , $40,000 on his BMW, $850,000 in office rent ... plus $60,000 in taxes."

Late Jan. 2012: For the octuplets' third birthday, Suleman reportedly plans to throw a rockstar themed soiree including "guitar pinatas, glitter tattoos, and novelty VIP passes for everyone."

March 2012: She tells CNN's Anderson Cooper she only made $8,000 to pose partially nude in Britain’s “Closer” magazine .

March 2012: Suleman is reportedly receiving $2,000 in government assistance from the state of California.

April 2012: Suleman yanks all but one of her brood out of private schools to cut costs. She tells CNN: "I don't feel it's appropriate to burden [the kids] with that kind of stress ... I do my best to have life for them every day as happy as possible. We play, we enjoy the moments we have together and that's all that really matters."
