Report: John Gruden would be ‘open to hearing’ from Texas about head coaching job
Would John Gruden consider leaving the ESPN Monday Night Football announcing booth for the sidelines at Darrell K. Royal Stadium?
A report from OrangeBloods.com citing a source says that the Super Bowl-winning coach has Texas as one of the few opportunities that would make him think about leaving MNF.
Although Gruden has flourished in broadcasting with ESPN since his departure from NFL coaching, our source mentioned that the Texas job is one of the few offers that Gruden would consider, claiming that the Super Bowl-winning coach view the position as one a few "premiere" jobs that he would consider if approached about them during an opening.
Oh look, Texas is a "premiere" job. There we go inflating their egos once again. Gruden was mentioned as a bigshot candidate for the Tennessee coaching job (again) before the school hired Butch Jones.
Mack Brown announced his resignation as Texas coach on Saturday and will coach the Longhorns' bowl game against Oregon in the Alamo Bowl.
All kidding aside -- Texas is one of the best jobs in the country -- who knows what the chances are of Gruden becoming the next Longhorns coach or even listening seriously to any pitch from UT. It's important to note that Texas had not contacted Gruden as of Tuesday night, per the report. But given the names that have been on Texas' list, Gruden popping up after the chances of getting Nick Saban in burnt orange went to near-zero seems natural, doesn't it?
And because of the names like Saban, Gruden, Harbaugh and Tomlin, the chances are pretty good that Texas could make a fantastic hire and leave a portion of the fanbase unsatisfied. Louisville coach Charlie Strong is listed as the Vegas favorite for the job and given what he's done with the Cardinals and his college experience, he seems a much more natural fit than the NFL coaches who have been bandied about.
