The Voice UK Gives Opportunity To Alopecia Sufferer Toni

The Voice UK have based their show around finding talent and not focusing on appearances, which is why Toni Warne, 34, decided that it might be the only opportunity for her to show what she’s got without being judged by the way she looks.

The singer was struck with alopecia at the age of 21, causing her to lose all of her hair and give up on her dreams of ever becoming a popstar, and Toni describes how it had “quite an impact,” making her lose all of her confidence and get a normal day job instead of playing gigs.

However, as the format of The Voice UK means that the four celebrity coaches – Jessie J, will.i.am, Tom Jones and Danny O’Donoghue – listen to Toni perform with their backs turned, the hopeful singer thought that this might give her the opportunity to display her vocal talents without being judged by her illness.

After belting out a powerfully emotive rendition of Will Young’s ‘Leave Right Now,’ the coaches all push their red buttons and spin around to see who the singer will choose as her mentor.

The mother-of-two emotionally confesses to the coaches: “I sung for a living, but the alopecia really knocked the stuffing out of me. I didn’t believe in myself.”

Danny O’Donoghue calls Toni an “old soul” and says: “I can tell you’ve been through pain. I think your voice is fantastic.”

An overwhelmed Toni has tears in her eyes as Tom Jones agrees, and Jessie J tells her: “You’re so old school I feel like you can teach ME something!”

Toni chooses to go on Jessie J’s team, guaranteeing that she will go through to the next round of the competition, and with Jessie’s guidance it looks like the talented singer will definitely be one to watch.
