Nick Saban High School is just a pipe dream
Nick Saban High School was almost a reality.
Montgomery's public school board called for suggestions to name the new high school in its area and got 60 different choices, including a proposal to name the school after Alabama's beloved football coach.
Unfortunately, the name was turned down in favor of New Park High School, but you can't blame someone for trying. After all, Bear Bryant High School opened in Tuscaloosa in 2003.
Montgomery Public Schools spokesman Tom Salter told the Montgomery Advertiser that it wasn't just about naming the school, but giving it an identity that those who attend can look back fondly on later in life.
"As big as an Alabama fan as I am, it would likely not be an appropriate choice, especially this close to the Plains," he said.
Montgomery is only about 55 miles or so from Auburn whereas it's about 134 to Tuscaloosa. Salter declined to comment on whether Gene Chizik's name had been thrown into the mix, too.
Can't say seeing Saban's name floated around is that big of a surprise. He has achieved rockstar status in the state. After Saban retires, who knows? This might become a reality.
