Cheerleader coach’s team delivers surprise wedding proposal

Crystal Escobar has helped elevate the cheerleading squad at Van Horn High School in Independence, Missouri.

And her cheerleaders paid back some of that loyalty by helping to deliver a unique wedding proposal from Escobar’s boyfriend.

The Kansas City Star reports that on Friday night, Escobar showed up to Van Horn’s football game, where her cheerleaders were going to be honored during halftime for their recent success during a state competition.

What she didn’t know was that her boyfriend Trevor Julo had gotten in touch with the school’s principal and athletic director to help arrange a wedding proposal that he hoped would be particularly meaningful for Escobar.

“This is one of those things that I want to be perfect,” Julo told the paper. “You have to leave it in other people’s hands and have faith that they are going to do the right thing at the right time and everything falls into place.”

After the squad performed their halftime routine, Escobar was recognized for her contributions. But after receiving a bouquet of flowers, Escobar then turned around to find her cheerleaders back in formation holding signs that read, “Will you marry me?”

Van Horn principal Patrick Layden said the girls on the cheerleading program were happy to perform the proposal routine for the coach who has meant so much to their success. “We had a good cheerleading program before she came, but she’s really turned it around,” Layden said. “The kids really have a real strong sense of teamwork, and it’s her that caused it.”

Julo then appeared onto the field and knelt before Escobar.

“It seems kind of weird, but it really fits for us, because my life really changed when I got this job here and the cheerleaders are like my family,” Escobar told the Star. “I’m here all the time, this is like where I live so it makes sense to do it here with everyone I love. Being in front of everybody was kind of nerve-racking, but it was still good.”
