Another No. 2 stunner: Lehigh upsets Duke in NCAA tournament

Ding, dong, Duke is dead.

In a historic upset that will both ruin brackets and delight a majority of the college basketball-watching public, No. 2 Duke, the team that inspires more love and hate than any team in the sport, was upset by No. 15 Lehigh on Friday night, 75-70.

It was the second time in four hours that a No. 15 defeated a No. 2 seed. Such a victory had only happened four times in the previous 28 years of the 64-team bracket.

Like fellow No. 2-seed Missouri, which was defeated earlier in the day by Norfolk State, Duke was felled by a porous defense. Twice in the final minutes, Lehigh was able to advance an inbound pass to a wide-open player near the Duke basket.

The win was Lehigh's first in the NCAA tournament. It was only the third opening-round defeat for Mike Krzyzewski in his 32 years coaching the Blue Devils.

The game took place in Greensboro, N.C., less than 30 minutes from Duke's campus. The Blue Devils were playing without All-ACC performer Ryan Kelly (sprained right foot).

Mike Krzyzewski was gracious in defeat and refused to blame the absence of Kelly for the loss. "That shouldn't be an excuse," he told CBS's Tracy Wolfson. "We had a couple of games to play without him. [...] They played better than we did and deserved to win."

Junior guard C.J. McCollum had 30 points for the Mountain Hawks to lead all scorers.

Duke's loss will get more notoriety than Missouri's but was the lesser of the two upsets. Forget the pedigree and star power; the Blue Devils were a flawed team all season and were widely expected to struggle in the NCAA tournament. This was not a typical Coach K team.

Missouri, on the other hand, had a top-ranked offense that was expected to make up for its defensive deficiencies.
