"No guarantee" of another Star Trek movie, says Zachary Quinto

Mr Spock actor Zachary Quinto has admitted that there may not be a fourth film in the ‘Star Trek’ reboot series.

Speaking on Today, the former ‘Heroes’ actor explains, “I know that they are working on a script for another one and we’ll see how that all plays out… I’m hopeful that we’ll do another one, but there’s no guarantee.”

Quinto took over from Leonard Nimoy in the iconic role, alongside Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Chu and the late Anton Yelchin in 2009’s ‘Star Trek.’ Technically the 11th film in the series based on the TV science fiction classic, director JJ Abrams took the franchise back to square one and established an alternate timeline.

However, while the 2009 reboot became the biggest box office hit of the series up to that point, it was divisive among devotees of the franchise, critical of its emphasis on action over intellectual content.

2012 sequel ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ proved even more polarising; though the highest-grossing ‘Trek’ movie ever ($467.4 million worldwide), it was panned by Trekkers, who infamously voted it the worst film in the series in a 2013 poll.

2016’s ‘Star Trek Beyond,’ which saw Justin Lin take over as director and Simon Pegg promoted to co-writer, garnered more favourable reviews but only moderate box office takings of $343.5 million – not so great, when the film cost a reported $185 million to make.

Plans for a fourth film in the reboot cycle were announced shortly after ‘Beyond’ opened, with talk of Chris Pine reprising his ‘Star Trek’ 2009 role as Captain Kirk’s father – but little more has been heard on the matter since.

However, new TV series ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ is in the works.
