Netflix Renews Jason Momoa Drama ‘Frontier’ for Season 2

Netflix has given a second season pickup to the period drama “Frontier,” starring Jason Momoa, prior to its premiere.

The six-episode series from Canada’s Bell Media is set to launch Nov. 6 on Discovery Canada. The Netflix premiere date is still to be determined.

“Frontier,” created by Peter Blackie and Rob Blackie, chronicles the rough-and-tumble fur trade in North America in the 18th century and the clashes between the newly arrived Europeans and the region’s aboriginal tribes.

Netflix and Discovery Canada have ordered another six episode. The series has lensed in Canada and the U.K.

Momoa is on a hot streak as he settles in for his run as Aquaman in a string of DC Comics-inspired movies, starting with this year’s “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.” He’ll be part of the ensemble in next year’s “Justice League” and is in line for his own star turn in “Aquaman” in 2018. Momoa’s past TV credits include HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” SundanceTV’s “Red Road” and “Stargate: Atlantis.”

Netflix announced on Monday that it is raising $1 billion through a new debt offering, raising its load to more than $3 billion. The streaming service has a long-term goal to make about half of its TV shows and movies original content.
