Here are the stores that are closed — and those still open — on Thanksgiving

You might be relieved (or devastated) to hear that your Thanksgiving gluttony may end with a tryptophan hangover instead of a mad dash to some of your favorite stores.

Fifty-two retailers nationwide have confirmed that they will be closed on the holiday, according to BestBlackFriday.com. GameStop (GME), Nordstrom (JWN) and T.J. Maxx (TJX) are among the growing list of holiday hot spots that will shutter their doors on Turkey Day. Of course, the Internet will be open for business, and several retailers are pushing online “doorbusters.”

Co-founder of BestBlackFriday.com Phil Dengler spoke to nearly 50 retailers and found that at least 50% of them explicitly said they are closing so their “employees and customers can enjoy Thanksgiving with their friends and families.”

Some major retailers that were open last year that have decided to close this year include the consumer electronics and home appliances retailer HHGregg (HGG) and the combined Office Depot (ODP) and Office Max. The former mentioned that opening on Thanksgiving has not been profitable enough to justify staying open, according to Dengler.

But, you can still count on larger retailers like Walmart (WMT), Best Buy (BBY), Kohl’s (KSS), JCPenney (JCP), Toys “R” Us and Sears (SHLD) to keep their doors open on Thanksgiving Day.

Macy’s (M) is actually opening at 5 p.m. this year (an hour earlier than last year), and Dengler said there is a very real chance that other department stores could follow suit.

“Many stores can get away with closing on Thanksgiving, but the major ones do not believe that they can,” said Dengler.

It looks like consumers are pro-Thanksgiving closures. Nearly 55% of Americans believe stores should be closed on Thanksgiving, according to a survey of 502 American adults.

Ultimately, Dengler says public perception is incredibly important, and retailers that choose to close on Thanksgiving might be seen in a positive light by American shoppers.

We’ll be updating this piece as more retailers announce they’ll be closed on Thanksgiving.
