2016 The Choice: Maureen Dowd on the final push to the election

Yahoo News Now Special Edition: “2016 The Choice” — Starting on Oct. 3, we’ll be coming to you live from the Yahoo Studios in New York City at 11 a.m. ET, bringing the latest information and analysis of the day’s most compelling storylines in the race for the White House.

On Monday, Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric talks with Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times op-ed columnist Maureen Dowd about the final campaign pushes of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton toward Election Day.

Dowd and Couric discussed President Obama’s recent interview with New York magazine. Dowd talked about the future of the GOP, saying, “The Republicans are going to have to figure out how they missed the boat on all these issues and didn’t even notice what this voting bloc was getting angry about.”

Dowd also said that “feminism died a little” under President Bill Clinton. She was answering a question about why feminists did not balk when revelations of Clinton’s affairs became public.

When asked about recent revelations that Trump may have avoided paying federal income tax for nearly two decades, Dowd said that while the story is a “big deal,” she is unsure about its impact in the race because many angry Trump voters may think, “You need a thief to catch a thief.”

Dowd also spoke with Couric about how Hillary Clinton grappled with Bill’s infidelities.

Over the weekend, Dowd retweeted many of Trump’s 2012 posts that focused on Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s breakup. She told Couric, “I think if you’ve been in journalism a long time, this race is just shocking because if you skip even an hour, you’ve missed seven shocking things that have happened.”

Finally, Dowd and Couric discussed whether Libertarian Party presidential nominee Gary Johnson will be a spoiler in November. Johnson is currently polling well with millennial voters. Dowd does not think he will be a spoiler, saying Johnson is “not a good advertisement for edibles.”
