Video Premiere: Singer-Songwriter Sara Melson Visits ‘El Matador Beach’

We at Yahoo Music have had our eye on Sara Melson for some time, having identified her years ago as an artist to watch. The indie singer-songwriter, Harvard-educated daughter of two college professors, yoga instructor, and former actress (The Wonder Years, Beverly Hills 90210) and ballerina has had her music featured on TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy; has shared the stage with an impressive range of musicians (Ben Folds, Juliana Hatfield, Ben Lee, Silversun Pickups, Neil Halstead, Lissie, Inara George, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club); and has also sung a backup for Moby, Mojave 3, and the Dandy Warhols.

Her debut album, Dirty Mind, came out on Nettwerk in 2008, followed by a second full-length, A Million White Stars, in 2013. Now the talented Americana troubadour has completed her third album, Safe and Sound, with producer Rick Parker (Lord Huron, the Raveonettes, BRMC, Joseph Arthur), for a September release via Nashville’s Tone Tree Music, and Yahoo Music is excited to share the album’s first music video, for “El Matador Beach.”

El Matador Beach, which is located north of Malibu, is a special place for Melson, who tells Yahoo Music this song and video were “inspired by the sound and feel of the waves, whose steady inhale and exhale are like deep yogic breaths. A rumination on life, death, the fleeting nature of youth, and the passage of time – the only constant throughout our brief, ever-changing lives is the cyclical power and majesty of nature.”

Check out the video above, which stars one of Melson’s real-life young piano students, Ellis Bijleveld, and was shot, directed, produced, and edited by an entirely female crew (producer/director Esther Washington, cinematographer/co-editor Kristie Marquis, co-editor Nadine El Khoury, and camera assistant Angelica Rodriguez).
