All the Inside Deets on Bachelorette JoJo's Shimmery Blue Gown

Bachelorette Nation set Twitter ablaze at the end of Monday night’s episode — but it wasn’t because of who JoJo sent home (spoiler: no one), it was because of her dress: a shimmering, body-conscious mermaid gown in the truest of blues by designer Jay Godfrey.

And we should probably mention: It was very décolleté.

We called upon stylist Cary Fetman — who’s been dressing the reality series’ stars for the last 14 years — for the inside scoop on that gown.

First up, Fetman insists that the sequined dress (which he describes as being “a cross between royal blue and cobalt”) didn’t have any underwire or hidden fashion tape underneath it to hold JoJo’s curves in place — just good old-fashioned tailoring. “It really did take an exact fitting to make sure nothing was gonna pop out,” he says. “And at one point [JoJo] even said to me, ‘I think you should tape me.’ And I was like, ‘No, because unfortunately with sequins, it can show. You’re in here tight. But if you want me to tape it … I’ll tape it.’ But we went against it, because the dress really was altered within an inch of its life.”

He also said the gown, which he chose without knowing when JoJo could even wear it, was “not as dangerous-looking in person as it was on TV.” As it turned out, the hometown date episode’s dramatic almost-rose ceremony was the perfect occasion. Explains Fetman, “This was the only place I saw that that this dress could fit in: a big open hangar. I needed something that was going to be bold.”

And despite all the emotional body contortions JoJo performed while wearing the dress (what, like you don’t fall over crying after a hot equine enthusiast says he’s falling in love with you on an airplane tarmac???), Fetman says there was nothing particularly stretchy about its fabric. “There was a tiny bit of stretch, but not really,” he explains. “It really was just a sequin dress.”

Fetman adds: “I always freak out when I see [the cast] playing basketball or sitting down on the ground. … It’s part of the show that you don’t know what they’re going to do, you don’t know when a guy is going to lift [the bachelorette] off the ground and twirl them. … It’s just one of those things where, as I’m watching it happening live, I’m kind of holding my breath, like ‘Oh please, please don’t let this be the time!‘”

Thankfully for Fetman, Monday night was not that time.
