Petition To Stop Adam Lambert Performing In Singapore Closes

A petition to stop Adam Lambert performing in Singapore has now closed after the singer announced he WOULD still play the Countdown 2016 concert on New Year’s Eve.

Loyal fans launched a counter petition, which has also now closed, after the original protest went live.

Those against his performance urged MediaCorp, who organised the concert, and the Singapore government to rethink the line-up, arguing Adam is ‘hardly the kind of performer to send off our historic Jubilee year’.

They added: “Singaporeans can enjoy a good show with their consciences being affronted by lewd acts in the name of entertainment.

“In addition, a simple online search would reveal that he is well-known for his active promotion of a highly sexualised lifestyle and LGTBT rights, of which are contrary to mainstream Singaporean values.”

They claimed his performance would ‘disregard’ those in Singapore who have ‘consistently resisted the promotion of western liberal ideas about family values and societal models’.

Sex between men is illegal in Singapore.

However, closing the petition, those behind it wrote: “This petition was meant to appeal to the better judgment of the Organisers to reconsider their choice of foreign performers in Countdown 2016, on the basis of inclusion of the young and the often cited silent majority in Singapore who continue to uphold values that appear contrary to the liberal west.

“It is never “just entertainment”, especially when the national stage is used. Unfortunately, our concerns to address the probability of lewd acts on a public platform have been downplayed and turned into yet another political LGBT rights issue.”

The counter petition, which has also now closed, addressed the event organisers, writing: “We the moral majority of Singapore utterly denounce and condemn the obvious sexual orientation discrimination demonstrated by the other petition on this site that is against Adam Lambert performing in Countdown 2016.

“Please allow Adam Lambert to perform in Countdown 2016 to demonstrate to the whole world that Singapore is a country that shuns discrimination and promotes diverse inclusive points of view.”

They added: “The opposing petition are anti family and anti Singaporean values because their discrimination harms family members. We support real family values and real Singaporean values by being modern and inclusive.”

They went on to claim the original petition had altered their wording ‘after they failed to win’, allegedly removing ‘the most egregious homophobic slurs’.

Adam himself released a statement via Warner Music’s Facebook page, writing: “My performance at Celebrate 2016 will not only be a spectacular one, it will celebrate the entire human family in all its diversity.

“I am a uniter, not a divider, and I believe in celebrating the human heart and spirit. I have put together an entirely new show experience for my fans that is kicking off in Singapore.

“The Original High tour is based primarily on new material, and it promises to be a thoughtful and sophisticated insight into the pursuit of happiness and self-worth.

“There is no better time for celebration than at the moment one year changes into another, so I hope you will join me to celebrate the future and 2016.”
