Dr. Dre sells L.A. mansion for $32 million ... to financier who plans to tear it down

Last year, we brought you the news that hip hop tycoon Dr. Dre was trading up on his Los Angeles mansions, buying the Brentwood eco-chateau built by football star Tom Brady and his wife, supermodel Gisele Bundchen.

His "old" mansion in the Hollywood Hills hit the market at about the same time -- and now it has sold, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The numbers provide a pretty eye-bulging snapshot of high-end L.A. real estate post-housing bubble (well, post last housing bubble, anyway):

• The six-bedroom, nine-bath, 10,000-square-foot mansion was built in 2001, around an existing wine cellar. (Click here or on a photo for a slideshow.)

• In 2004, the mansion was shopped around at $16 million but apparently did not sell.

• In 2009, it was listed at $15,450,000 and sold not long afterward for $12.8 million to the homeowner before Dr. Dre.

• In December 2011, Dr. Dre bought the mansion for $15.4 million.

• In June 2014, just two and a half years later, he listed his mansion at $35 million, an increase of 127 percent. As far as we can tell, he hadn't done any work on the home: The listing mentioned no recent upgrades or renovations, and the most recent permitting activity we found was in 2006.

• Dr. Dre just sold the mansion for $32 million, more than doubling his money.

And the new owner? He plans to tear it down.

The lot is three-quarters of an acre on a promontory that offers 300-degree views from the mountains to the ocean — "the best view estate in the city," previous listings claimed. And Oriole Way is rarefied territory in the locally famous "bird streets," where neighbors include Leonardo DiCaprio and Keanu Reeves.

The buyer is self-made mogul Alex Soltani, the Times reports. At 36 years old, he's chairman and CEO of a private equity firm in L.A. called Skyview Capital, whose core business involves tech and telecommunications buyouts.

Soltani plans to exploit the views and "transform the property into a $100-million trophy home," the Times said.
