It’s one thing for a stranger to return a camera that you accidentally left behind in a cab. It’s nothing short of a miracle when a stranger returns a camera you left on another continent five months ago.

A photographer from Sydney got the surprise of a lifetime when another tourist found the camera she’d lost on a trip to Antarctica.

In December, Hulia Boz visited Antarctica for a two week vacation. During the trip, she carried a white point-and-shoot camera which she used to snap photos of her rolling around with seals and hanging out with friends. The group even recorded a video message on the camera to talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, because they had been watching episodes of her show on an iPad.

The next day, Boz was unpacking her belongings on the tour boat when she realized something was missing. “The ship started to pull away and I thought ‘Where is the camera? Where is the camera?,’” Boz told the Daily Mail. “And we thought ‘No! We were going to send it to Ellen!’”

Meanwhile, at the bottom of the earth, an unknown tourist who was part of another expedition found the camera. Antarctica is 5.4 million square miles, this camera was very small, and to add to the difficulty, it was white and blended in with the snow. Talk about an eagle eye!

Back in December, en route to Antarctica, Boz had departed from Ushuaia, Argentina. It’s common practice that anyone headed to the frigid continent take a mugshot so that they can be identified later if needed. The tourist gave the mystery camera to officials who were able to compare a selfie they found on the camera, to a mugshot taken in Argentina. So, in the end, a selfie is what cracked the case.

“The effort, patience, and goodwill that was put into reuniting me with my memories by strangers has amazed me,” said Boz. “It has restored my faith in humanity.”
