Yahoo Travel Gets Results: NYC Airports Will Get Free Wi-Fi

On Wednesday, free wireless access was approved by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey after they renegotiated terms with Internet provider, Boingo.

But of course, there’s a catch. The free Wi-Fi is only for the first 30 minutes. After that it will cost $7.95 a day. It’s not a total slam dunk, but it’s something.

Joseph Sitt is the founder of the Global Gateaway Alliance (GGA),  an airport advocacy organization, and calls this a definite victory. “Free Wi-Fi is a major step forward for our airports,” Sitt said. “And more importantly, a major win for passengers.”

This news comes just 3 days after we ran a story about the GGA and the  NYC City Council’s plea for free Wi-Fi in New York Area Airports.

Council members wrote an impassioned letter to Boingo, asking that they renegotiate their terms of service with the Port Authority, and provide complimentary Wi-Fi at Newark, JFK and LaGuardia airports. Ask and you shall receive.

The service is expected to begin this fall.
