6 Things that Made Us LOL from the TSA's Holiday Tips Blog Posts

If you’ve ever been through a security line at the airport, you wouldn’t think that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has a sense of humor. Yet when we read the TSA’s blog posts on helpful holiday-travel tips, some of them had us giggling like schoolgirls. It’s true, many of the posts weren’t meant to but funny, but oh, they were. Here are some of the random tidbits that made us chuckle.

Nothing says Thanksgiving like a log of gelatinous cranberry sauce. (Mr.TinDC/Flickr)

1. Just in case you were wondering, you’re not allowed to carry on canned cranberry sauce — or snow globes. Unless they’re 3.4 oz. or less, of course.

Hmmm… this Christmas cake didn’t have a bite out of it before it went through security. (elana’s pantry/Flickr)

2. You can carry on pies, cakes, and turkeys, “but they are subject to additional screening,” says the TSA. And we thought the old file-in-the-cake trick was just for prison.

3. Wrapped gifts are allowed through security but not encouraged because the TSA may have to open it: “Our officers try their best not to mangle the gift wrap, but it’s not a guarantee…” Plus, as the blog points out, that extra step will piss off everyone else who’s waiting in the line.

4. You can only bring 5 pounds of dry ice on board, whether checked or carried. Who knew?

5. On the topic of jewelry: “Some passengers come through TSA checkpoints wearing a simple piece of jewelry, and others are all blinged out like the A-Team’s Mr. T.” And yes, the TSA blog linked to this picture of Mr. T.

6. “Did you know that children 12 and under can keep their shoes on?” asks the TSA. Why, yes we did, thank you.

To be fair, we found a couple of useful tidbits, too.

You don’t have to resort to monkey business if you forget your ID. (Erik Marshall/Flickr)

1. If you have lost or forgotten your ID, “you’ll be able to fly as long as you provide us with some information that will help us determine you are who you say you are.” Good to know.

2. And a helpful trick: “Tape your business card or contact info to your valuable electronics. Not only does this help us contact you if you lose your items, but it prevents travelers from grabbing the wrong item by mistake.” Of course, it also lets a thief know where he can find some more electronics.

Happy holiday traveling!
