Kill order withdrawn for shark

Authorities have withdrawn a catch and kill order for a shark that has been spotted swimming off a popular WA beach since Friday.

The tagged shark had been detected hanging around Warnbro Sound for more two weeks, sometimes within a kilometre of the shore.

The catch and kill order was issued on Friday and drumlines deployed yesterday but early this afternoon Department of Fisheries Acting Director Genera Rick Fletcher withdrew the order.

"An increase in the level of detections during daylight hours on consecutive days last week prompted the additional capture response to be undertaken," the department said in a statement.

"With the frequency of daytime detections having reduced over the past few days, the risk level has today been reviewed."

Warnbro Beach will be opened this afternoon but swimmers are still urged to take caution at the beach.
