Avril Lavigne really needs a how-to guide on meet-and-greets with fans

She may not have thrown cupcakes at them, but the way Avril Lavigne interacted with her fans at a recent meet-and-greet is still receiving plenty of criticism. The "Hello Kitty" singer reportedly charged her Brazilian fans $400 each (and that's on top of the concert ticket price) to take photos with her after a recent concert in Brazil. And the kicker? The "lucky" fans were instructed not to touch or talk to Lavigne, either.

Photos dubbed "awkward" by much of the media depict Lavigne's fans trying to make the best of the situation, smiling and leaning in as the Canadian pop star poses a respectable distance away.

Lavigne could learn a thing or two from other stars who embrace the fan meet-and-greet. Here are a few tips from some of her celebrity peers:

Be affectionate

Take fellow Ontarian Justin Bieber: The 20-year-old "Boyfriend" singer has built his fame on his close relationship with his fans. The Biebs does not shrink away from his supporters; instead, he pounces on them, giving them kisses and hugs and generally returning the enthusiasm with which they greet him.

"I want them to see that I’m not too good for them," Bieber told V magazine in 2012.

Don't be scared

And while Bieber's off-on girlfriend Selena Gomez is not as touchy-feely with her fans, she is open to an arm around her waist here, and a little hug there.

"I don't feel like I can do enough for my fans," Gomez told Seventeen earlier this year. "I work a lot, I work hard, and I get tired. But when you walk onstage and see these people who wait hours outside just to see you, it's the greatest thing in the world.”

Have fun

British boy band One Direction is equally affectionate with their fans. All five members of the group pose in elaborate playful scenes with their fans during their meet-and-greets.

"They are so dedicated…our fans put us where we are," Harry Styles told the BBC in 2013. "I don’t think it’s something that should be taken as a negative, I think passion’s good in any form."
