Mischa Barton faces possible foreclosure in Beverly Hills

Buying in the O.C. might have been cheaper.

Actress Mischa Barton’s Beverly Hills villa is in default, property records confirm. She's $100,000 behind on mortgage payments despite her several attempts to sell or rent out the villa. (Click here or on a photo for a slideshow of the property.)

The former “O.C.” star bought the 8-bedroom, 11-bath estate for $6.4 million in 2005. That was near the height of the real estate bubble — and the height of her fame. But she got in too deep and has been notified that she's in default, as TMZ first reported Sunday. A notice of default is the first step in a possible foreclosure.

The British actress, now 28, rose to stardom in films such as “Notting Hill” and “The Sixth Sense,” then won Teen Choice Awards in 2004, 2005 and 2006 for her role on the TV drama “The O.C.”

Since then, her career has taken a tumble, and 2670 Bowmont Drive quickly became out of her reach. She listed it in 2010 for $8.695 million, leaving it on the market for about a year. Then she listed it for rent for $35,000 a month, but when that was unsuccessful, she listed it for sale again, still at $8.695 million.

The 7,607-square-foot Spanish-style home is gated, with views of Catalina Island. It has a glamorous formal dining room, a huge master suite with a fireplace and a double-height entry with a marble staircase. The property includes a nearly 3,000-square-foot guesthouse, a pool and spa, and private decks.

The listing is held by Joe Babajian of Rodeo Realty.

Last year, Barton talked to People magazine about some of her struggles:
