Golfer on his painful US Open qualifier DQ: 'I'm a huge idiot'

Landon Michelson's ticket to Pinehurst was punched until his scorecard mishap

Part of the charm of golf's U.S. Open is the potential for underdogs, amateur players qualifying to play against the best in the world in their national championship. There are a handful of these stories every year during the time of sectional qualifying, which is currently underway, and while you'll likely read plenty about the few club pros who beat the odds to join the field at Pinehurst, stories like this painful near-miss are far more rare.

Landon Michelson was playing in the sectional qualifier at Quail Valley in Vero Beach when he shot two rounds of 71 to earn a U.S. Open berth. Unfortunately, the 22-year-old graduate of Rice University signed the card for his second round incorrectly, effectively disqualifying himself from the tournament.

Kelly Tilghman, Damon Hack, and Phil Blackmar talked to Michelson on Golf Channel's Morning Drive, and the young golfer was admirably candid.

"Essentially, I'm here today talking to you and dealing with all this just because I'm a huge idiot," Michelson said. "It's all on me. In golf, like I said, you have to be responsible for signing your own score and for writing everything down. It's not my caddie's fault. It's not my playing partner's fault. It's my fault."
