Notorious Versace mansion sells for $41.5 million — a third of original price

The beleaguered mansion Casa Casuarina, where owner Gianni Versace was slain in 1997, finally sold today at bankruptcy auction. It went for $41.5 million, to a company affiliated with the owners of jeans company Jordache, Reuters reports.

Considering that the mansion was originally listed last year at $125 million -- the nation's most expensive single-family home on the market at the time -- the price is a relative bargain at about a third the price. The property had been entangled in legal disputes for a couple of years. Until May, the 23,000-square-foot home had been used as a boutique hotel.

Donald Trump was one of the losing bidders, according to Reuters.

Versace bought the home for about $10 million in 1992 and spent $33 million adding a wing and exterior plazas. The home has a rooftop observatory,an "onyx water closet," a 54-foot-long pool lined in 24K gold, Turkish showers in the "Moroccan lounge," extensive handpainted murals and (of course) much more. The home is being sold fully furnished. (Click here or on a photo to go to an extensive slideshow.)

Versace was returning from the News Cafe down the street, where he'd just purchased some magazines, when spree killer Andrew Cunanan met him at the front gate and shot him twice in the back of the head.
