John Mellencamp’s Teenage Sons Charged With Felony Battery

Talk about a "wild night."

John Mellencamp's sons – Hud, 19, and Speck, 18 – are in hot water. Felony battery charges have been filed against the brothers, one an amateur boxing champ, for allegedly beating a man so severely that he may need plastic surgery.

Court documents obtained by the Indianapolis Star newspaper describe the brutal attack, which took place in Bloomington, Indiana, during the early hours of July 29. The brothers and their friend Ty Smith (the son of local University of Indiana baseball coach Tracy Smith), who was also charged, arrived outside the home of a 19-year-old man after a party.

The victim told police the younger Mellencamp brother, Speck, approached him and punched him so hard he fell over. Then all three men began kicking, punching, and stomping on him until his roommates became aware of the situation and came out to try and break it up. However, the fight continued until the Mellencamps and Smith eventually ran away from the home.

The victim was taken to a local hospital and treated for facial fractures, and required sutures. He was also referred to a plastic surgeon for consultation for his injuries.

According to the paper, police interviewed Speck and he said the attack was in response to an incident earlier that night. He claimed he was a party and either the victim or one of his roommates (it was not immediately clear exactly who) hit him in the face.

The brothers are the sons of the "Pink Houses" musician (formerly known as John Cougar Mellencamp) and his ex-wife, model Elaine Irwin, who were married from 1992 to 2011. And Hud has better than average fighting skills having won Indiana Golden Gloves boxing titles in 2009, 2010, and 2011. He's also a member of Duke University's football team, though his felony battery charges may impact his playing status.

A rep for Irwin had "no comment" about the incident and a spokesperson for the singer has not yet responded to our inquiries. However, when Mellencamp, who dates Meg Ryan, appeared on "Late Show With David Letterman" in June, he was sporting a black eye, which he said came from Speck.

"My son and I had words, and he got a punch in and I didn't," he said (see below at the 1:05 mark). "[He's] 18. He's 6'2 and weighs almost 200 pounds."
