Oct. 14: ‘Winnie-the-Pooh’ was published on this day in 1926; here’s the real-life House at Pooh Corner for sale

One of the world's most beloved books was published 88 years ago today: A.A. Milne's "Winnie-the-Pooh" came out on Oct. 14, 1926.

We probably don't need to tell you much about the Hundred Acre Wood, the House at Pooh Corner and all their inhabitants -- but we would like to share with you the real-life inspiration for all of it.

Milne's Cotchford Farm in England's East Sussex has been on the market for some time now, asking 2 million pounds (about $3.2 million at today's exchange rates). The real Christopher Robin grew up on its 9.5 country acres. The Ashdown Forest, less than a mile away, contained the inspiration for the Hundred Acre Wood (where the real Christopher Robin used to take his stuffed bear), and many specific spots mentioned in Milne's stories can be found there.

The house is thought to date back to the mid-16th century and has six bedrooms, five bathrooms and four "reception rooms" in its 3,800 square feet. Stone statues throughout the garden depict Christopher Robin, Owl and other characters.
