Mother Nature put on a spectacular sky show in Broome yesterday with this stunning waterspout seen from Eco Beach.

Dean Cooper, who took the photo, said: “It was a special experience. It was massive, like a massive vacuum cleaner just sucking up everything out of the ocean, going straight up in to the sky.”

Waterspouts form over a body of water and are connected to a shower cloud with the air being forced up in the draft making them spin.

Weather Bureau duty forecaster James Ashley said waterspouts formed when there was an unstable air mass and strong updrafts.

He said they were not uncommon, especially in the northern parts of the State.

The more dangerous Tornadic waterspouts usually form during severe storms and are essentially tornadoes that form over water.
