Becton Dickinson buys diagnostic instrument maker Alverix for $40M

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. (AP) -- Medical equipment supplier Becton Dickinson said Tuesday it bought diagnostic instrument maker Alverix for $40 million.

Becton Dickinson has been working with the privately held company since 2008 on the BD Veritor System, which is used to quickly detect viral infections like influenza, Streptococcus, and respiratory syncytial virus.

Becton Dickinson & Co. said the purchase of the San Jose, Calif., company won't affect its 2014 guidance. Its shares rose $1.68 to $111.13 in midday trading.
