The Most Misbegotten Car of the New York Auto Show

No sentences uttered at this year’s New York auto show carried more dread than this one: “There is growing demand for a pink Beetle at Volkswagen dealers.”

Hence, the VW Beetle Pink Edition, one of four customized models VW rolled out at the show, but the only one that in theory could go into production and be sold to the delight of a few and the befuddlement of many.

The color, called Pink Metallic, looks like a shade discovered at the local nail salon. It’s not just the outside, but the inside; in the seat stitching, and on the steering wheel, and VW says if the people who want a pink Beetle want more pink in their Beetle, VW will turn the pink up to 11.

It’s not just the United States, but Chinese dealers who have apparently lost their sense of color or restraint. Michael Horn, VW’s President and CEO for North America said “the ladies in the company have really fought for” the pink Beetle, which sounds like a line from the final season of "Mad Men." If these pink VW things actually come to pass, America will only have itself to blame.
