Not a Birdbrain— Clever Ostrich Attempts to Open Car Door at Safari Park

An ostrich may be a birdbrain, but they’re smarter than you think.

A hilarious video posted on Youtube shows an ostrich attempting to open a car door at a safari park in England. The passenger captured the clip on her smartphone, using the rearview mirror to catch the action.

In the clip published on Aug. 3, you can see the ostrich approach the car before it starts to peck at the door handle with its beak. After four attempts, the bird gives up, and the camera pans over to the animal’s disappointed face.

Before the video ends, the ostrich makes a few more attempts to open the door. Amidst laughter, the shocked driver jokingly says, “Grand theft ostrich” as the car drives away.

According to the notes under the video, the car door was left with more than a few scratches after the beak attack.

This isn’t the first time that an animal has attempted to break into a car at a safari park. In March, a lion opened a passenger’s door at an animal reserve in Africa. Luckily, the visitor visitor reacted quickly and  snatched the door closed before she ended up as dinner.
