GMO labeling, saving Africa’s stranded baby elephants, and water conservation were just a few of the topics on people’s lips at Saturday’s celeb-packed Environmental Media Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Jessica Biel, Blythe Danner, Stana Katic, and Lance Bass were among the stars who came out to support this year’s honorees, which included Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Henley, and Kristen Davis.

Both Davis and Emmanuelle Chriqui took the carpet in Stella McCartney. “I’m a giant fan of hers and I love that she’s super conscious in how she chooses to run her business,” Chriqui told us. The Entourage actress, who paired her ensemble with Jacquie Aiche earrings, raved about another one of her favorite sustainable designers. “There’s a line called Cuyana that’s got amazing beautiful silks and leathers. And they source all their stuff from great places with very little footprint. They’re an amazing company,” she said.

As for Davis, she accessorized her outfit with Kimberly McDonald jewelry. “She is a big animal lover and a big conservationist so I really respect her for that,” she explained. “And obviously, Stella is incredibly animal friendly and we want to support those people who are fighting the good fight within their own industry.” The Sex in the City actress, who was celebrated later in the evening for her efforts to save elephants at risk of extinction via poaching, told us that finding green fashion is always a struggle. She’s recently, however, become a fan of designer Rachel Roy. She’s also a huge admirer of Livia Firth and considers Eco-age.com to be her “who to wear” and “what to buy” bible.

As of late, pay equality in Hollywood has been a hot topic in the industry. Just a few weeks ago, Jennifer Lawrence penned an essay about getting paid less than her male costars. Bradley Cooper, who starred alongside Lawrence in American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook, recently announced that he will negotiate fair pay with the women he’s working with before he starts a project. It seems more and more people in Hollywood are speaking out about the issue, but for Blythe Dnner, such battles are meant to be fought by more mainstream stars like Lawrence or her daughter Gwyneth Paltrow. “I’m not one of the big movie stars. I’m just happy when I get paid!” she joked. Danner arrived on the carpet wearing a pink dress, which she accented with a vintage statement necklace that was gifted to her by her daughter. “I’m green inside, but I thought I’m a lady of a certain age and I need a little razzle dazzle,” she said of her colorful ensemble.

Stana Katic turned out for the affair in a sequined Naeem Khan jumper. “It’s a little bit rock star-ish, simple, so it felt comfortable and easy for tonight. And tonight feels like a night that you just want to be able to move freely around because there’s a green carpet. So who knows? Might take off the shoes and run around barefoot!” On the set of Castle, Katic says she and her team are constantly researching natural makeup options. “I’m under the lights a lot, so I do try to find products that will be easier on your skin. And so we’re constantly researching and shaking that up.” Right now she’s really into Tarte, Dr. Hauschka, and Cinq Mondes.

Dita Von Teese was also on hand, looking absolutely stunning in Vivienne Westwood. “It feels a little like gothic 30’s,” she told us of her ensemble. She accessorized her look with cascading Chanel earrings, which the infamous burlesque dancer complained were extremely heavy. “I’m hoping they’ll stay on! I’ll lose them at least a few times tonight!” While her fellow attendees were dishing on their favorite environmental issues, Von Teese used her green carpet appearance as an opportunity to urge young models to be careful when signing photo releases. “I have a pretty risqué past. I used to pose for all these bondage photos and stuff. The problem is, some people took advantage,” she explained. “I didn’t expect to be known. I didn’t expect to be standing on a red carpet or a green carpet. I probably would have been a little more savvy about that. So I urge a lot of young models that fall in my footsteps, be careful what you sign. Don’t be afraid to just say no. Make sure you have a little bit of control over your image. You never know what’s going to happen.”

Bass, who hosted the festivities, admitted to feeling a bit of FOMO over the previous night’s GLSEN event. “I didn’t know about it!” he explained. “I saw all of my friends at the GLSEN event and I was like, ‘Oh my God! I missed Justin [Timberlake] getting an award at GLSEN, one of my favorite organizations.’ So yeah, I missed out.” On the topic of his former boy band colleague, Bass told reporters how great it’s been to see Timberlake as a parent. “It’s fun to see his face. It’s a different face. He’s a Dad!” He also touched on his own eagerness to start a family. “We want to start in the next couple years. I just need to know what city I’m going to be living in first, that would be nice!” As for his look, Bass admitted to accidentally leaving his suit for the EMAs in New York and having to scramble to Topshop at the last minute to pick another one up. “I love it because it just fits. You don’t have to get it altered or anything. It’s just the way they make the suits. It’s like, Boop! Done! You’re good to go.”

When Paltrow finally arrived, it seemed she was focused solely on the acceptance speech she was due to give. On the red carpet, she blanked on her dress I.D, but hey – she’s only human. Later in the evening, the Goop founder and environmental activist took the podium to receive the EMA Green Parent Award. In her acceptance speech, she reminisced on her childhood days, citing her mother as the reason she is so eco-conscious today. While other children grew up eating Oreos, wearing flame-retardant pajamas, and swimming in the Santa Monica Bay, Paltrow said that she and her brother spent their youth sorting plastics at the nearby recycling center and holding up signs to alert passing drivers that they were polluting the surrounding air.

“I have never ever in my entire life brushed my teeth with the water running, not once. My particular favorite form of teenage rebellion was purposefully leaving the lights on in my bedroom,” she joked. “It’s up to us to use safe products, buy safe food, and use our influence to do everything we can to ensure that our planet does not heat up past the point of no return.” Paltrow thanked the crowd for honoring her, adding “When you honor me, you’re really honoring my mother who taught me what it means to have a value system. With her raw power and gentle femininity, she imparted the code of ethics and behavior that has become a part of who I am. She taught me free thinking, creative, unselfconsciousness, social responsibility, and the bravery to be myself. So thank you for honoring us.” She ended her speech with, “And let’s get drunk!” which instantly earned her a standing ovation.
