Panthers cleared to sign ex-AFL player Garlett

Former AFL player turned methylamphetamine addict Dayle Garlett, who is currently behind bars, has been cleared to play for Carey Park Football Club.

Garlett’s clearance for the South West Football League club was approved yesterday, with the former Hawthorn midfielder agreeing to play with the club despite being remanded in custody until March 24.

Garlett is facing charges of burglary and stealing after allegedly breaking into a Spearwood home during the day on February 16.

Garlett has been a WA football prodigy since his days playing for Swan Districts Colts, but was released by AFL club Hawthorn last year after failing to handle the rigours of league football.

The 21-year-old last year admitted to the West Australian that he developed a powerful methylamphetamine addiction just months after being drafted by premiers Hawthorn.

Garlett was originally overlooked in the 2012 draft despite being named in the under-18 All Australian team that year after a great championships series with WA.

At the time Garlett was touted as a likely top-10 pick.

Garlett had a sensational season for Swan Districts in 2013 when he kicked 45 goals and averaged more than 20 possessions a game as a small forward.

He polled 24 Sandover Medal votes, the most of any Swans player that year.

Garlett entered not guilty pleas to stealing and driving charges laid in November in the Geraldton Magistrate’s Court last month, following incidents at Beechboro near Perth and Greenough.
