The Patriots once invited President Kennedy to join the team

It's an NFL truism that Tom Brady could turn anybody, even you and your pals, into a Super Bowl-contending receiving corps. But what about a former touch football star with a bad back?

On Twitter, historian Michael Beschloss shared the following 1961 letter from the "Boston Patriots Football Club" inviting President John Kennedy to join the team:

The Patriots' letter to JFK.
The Patriots' letter to JFK.

"We are desperately in need of fine receivers," then-coach Lou Saban wrote, "and wondered if you would desire to fill the bill." Patriots needing receivers? Man, the more things change ...

Anyway, the letter from Saban (no relation to Alabama's head coach Nick) was merely a bit of politicking, inviting JFK to attend a game and supporting Kennedy in his "battle for democracy and freedom." And there's the difference between the Patriots' 1961 coach and its 2015 one: Bill Belichick has probably sent the White House detailed playbooks for defeating every enemy, sooner or later.
