Holy Hobbit! This Patagonian Hotel Erupts with a Waterfall

If you want a hotel water show that’s a lot more exclusive and exotic than the Bellagio in Vegas, head to the Patagonian rain forest in Chile. There you can stay in a manmade volcano that erupts with water once a day.
It’s hard to get more original than the Montaña Mágica Lodge, a 13-room property inside the 300-acre Huilo-Huilo Reserve. If Frodo Baggins opened a hotel in the Shire after retiring from saving Middle Earth, it would look something like this. The entire five-floor structure is built with wood and stone—even the hot tubs are made of a tree trunks – it’s covered with greenery from the outside, and the only way inside is through a swinging rope bridge high above the ground.

The luxury rooms are asymmetrical (because of course, the place is shaped like a volcano), with walls jutting out at strange angles. There’s a bar and restaurant on site, for when you want to unwind from your day’s adventures.

Those adventures within Huilo-Huilo include the following: one of the longest and highest zip lines in South America, rafting, mountain biking, a mini-golf course made from the natural terrain, and plenty of hiking.

This being a rain forest, there’s also abundant wildlife to observe, including the world’s smallest deer, the 13-inch pudu; and the endangered Darwin’s frog.

The price of staying here isn’t as lofty as you might think, at $264 a night. That’s considerably less than the $1,000 or so per night that you’d have to pay at the Nawelpi Lodge inside Huilo-Huilo.
