Barnett flags longer Sunday shop hours

Colin Barnett has flagged extending Sunday shopping hours by up to two hours if his Government is re-elected in 2017.

The Premier this morning ruled out introducing new Sunday hours this electoral term because of the promise he made when he introduced Sunday trading that he would not make more changes.

But he said he would look at increasing Sunday shopping hours by an hour or two next term.

“I haven’t changed my mind in the sense that when we as a Government introduced Sunday shopping, that was done through negotiations with the unions and retailers, particularly small business,” Mr Barnett said.

“But if we are re-elected in 2017 we may well extend Sunday shopping, but I’ve made a commitment and I keep to my commitments.”

Most general retail shops are currently banned from opening before 11am on Sundays in WA.

Mr Barnett ruled out extending the general trading hours on Sunday from 11am to 9am earlier this year.
