See It First: Van Hunt Begs for Mercy in ‘Headroom’ Video

Soul singer-songwriter Van Hunt scored the 2007 Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals Grammy for a “Family Affair,” a tribute to Sly and the Family Stone he recorded with John Legend and Joss Stone. While he’s also received acclaim for his many other collaborations and touring stints with Kanye, Coldplay, and Mary J. Blige, he is equally beloved for nearly a half-a-dozen solo albums that fuse funk, rock, R&B, and neo-soul.

On Tuesday, Hunt drops his latest album, The Fun Rises, The Fun Sets, and Yahoo Music is pleased to premiere the music video for the track, “Headroom.”

Antagonists in recent break ups should be forewarned before listening to “Headroom.” Hunt projects his deep-rooted pain in the incredibly sorrowful ballad. “I wish I could edit the things I said to you,” he admits in the song. “You know that I regret it / The s–t I put you through.”

The video illustrates his remorse, depicting a somber Hunt wandering alongside a highway into the night, eventually falling asleep in a field. As the clip fades the lyric “Have mercy on me” repeats in the background.

Even without knowing Hunt’s role in the demise of his relationship, listeners can’t help from feeling compassion for him thanks to his brilliant display of emotion.
