Kevin Feige Dismisses Warner Bros. Boss’ Marvel Complaints

Kevin Feige has responded to claims from Warner Bros. Pictures President Greg Silverman that Marvel’s output is more studio-driven rather than director-driven.

Silverman insisted that for Warner Bros.’ upcoming slate of DC based films the studio have given the likes of Zack Snyder, David Ayer, and Patty Jenkins free reign to create their blockbusters. Silverman then stated that he believes this is the opposite approach to Marvel.

But Kevin Feige, the head-honcho over at Marvel who has turned them into the global behemoth they are today, took umbrage with Silverman’s comments after they were revealed to him during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Feige explained, “My response is: Look at the movies. ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Iron Man 2’ are as Jon Favreau films as you can see. Kenneth Branagh has his stamp all over ‘Thor’. ‘Captain America: First Avenger’ is very much a Joe Johnston film. The greatest example of that, look at ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ with James Gunn. “

But Feige’s most prominent point came in the shape of ‘The Avengers’.

Feige admitted that they gave Joss Whedon a structure that they wanted him to adhere to, which was basically, “Here’s where we think the movie should start, here’s where we think this character should come into it; it would be fun if something like this happened in the middle and in the end a hole opens up and aliens pour into Manhattan.”

However, despite this outline, Joss Whedon was still able to fully implement his voice on the film. And this is exactly the way that Feige wants it, as he remarked, “We wouldn’t have hired any of the filmmakers we’ve hired if we just wanted somebody who would do what we say.”

Marvel has so far towed the line perfectly between how a film slots into their cinematic universe, while making sure that it’s still its own entity too. We’ll see if DC can match this success when their cinematic universe starts to truly unfold with next summer’s ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice.’
