A disgusted shopper had the shock of her life when she opened a bag of Asda frozen spinach - and found a severed rat’s head.

Terri Powis, 33, bought the 98p own-brand bag of veg to enjoy with her chicken dinner.

But she was horrified to a find thumb-sized and perfectly-preserved rat's head when she began defrosting the spinach in a steamer.

The accounts assistant didn't notice the severed head to begin with as it was wrapped up in a clump of the green leaves.

But as it began to defrost the rodent's head slowly emerged from the spinach.

Terri, from High Wycombe, Bucks, said: 'It didn't even cross my mind that it was the head of a rat.

'I was poking around with it because I didn't know what it was. I was gobsmacked when I realised what it was - it was horrible.

'It was very fresh and really pink. It was a bit squashed but intact and must have been frozen soon after being severed.'

Terri bought the bag of spinach from her local Asda branch in High Wycombe and used the veg to prepare a meal for her 60-year-old mum on January 19.

After discovering the head she phoned Asda to complain and received an apology - but Terri believes they did not take her complaint seriously.

She added: 'The way they handled it was like it happened every day.  They said sorry but it was just a “Yeah, bring it back to the store”.

'I felt it should have been dealt with more seriously.'

An Asda spokesperson said: 'We'd like to apologise for any upset caused to Ms Powis, and we will work closely with the local authorities whilst they conduct their investigation.'
