But before psyching yourself out with visions of awkward encounters or a clown-like final product, take a peak at this guide from Juanita Maloney, the Nars business manager at Henri Bendel. She's breaking down every trick in the book so you can stroll in-and out-feeling cool and confident. Here's what you should know!

You don't need an appointment, but it doesn't hurt either.
"We'll always take a walk-in, but if you're going to a function, you may want to make an appointment because you could have to wait. Just call the counter and tell them what you'd want to get done."
Come prepared.
"If you're going to go to a big event, wear something in a similar color scheme of your outfit to give us a better image of what you'll look like. Also, bring along pictures as inspiration because that gives us a more precicse idea of what you want. If you say red lip, that can mean one thing to you and another thing to someone else."

There's no need to put any products on before heading over.
"Coming bare-faced is the best, but we do have products to take off your makeup if you don't want to arrive without anything on."
Communication is key.
"The artist will probably try to push the envelope with your makeup, so go in with an open mind. It's about the two people communicating to get to the look you'll feel happy leaving with. But don't be scared to ask questions and speak up!"
Every beauty base will be covered.
"We'll start with skin preparation, using toner and primer before applying foundation. It can just be tinted moisturizer if you're doing a lighter look. You want your base to be flawless. Then we'll move on to color, like eyeshadow and a lip. We go from A-Z. And we'll often create a face chart to map the experience, writing what products we used and where."
It's technically free, but you may want to bring some money.
"There's no charge for an application, but you might love something that was used so much that you want to buy it. The lip color is purchased most often because that can come off easily and people like to reapply. Liner and mascara are popular purchases too."
