Boston Marathon: Bruins postpone game vs. Senators after explosions stun city

The Boston Bruins have postponed their game against the Ottawa Senators scheduled for Monday night at TD Garden, after multiple explosions at the Boston Marathon killed at least two individuals and injured over 100 more according to the Boston Globe.

Defenseman Andrew Ference tweeted that the “game is off. Our best to everyone affected, please be safe.” That followed a report by Joe McDonald of ESPN Boston that “Bruins players have been told there's no game and are now leaving.”

The NHL later made it official:

The game between the Ottawa Senators and Boston Bruins scheduled for tonight at TD Garden has been postponed, the National Hockey League announced today.

The game will be rescheduled. The date and time will be announced at a later date.

The National Hockey League wishes to express its sympathy to all affected by the tragic events that took place in Boston earlier this afternoon.

And Bruins president Cam Neely also released a statement:

After consultation with City, State and NHL officials we collectively made the decision to postpone tonight's game. Public safety personnel from the City and State are still gathering information regarding today's events and it is vital they have all resources available for their investigation. The thoughts and prayers of everyone in the Bruins organization are with the city of Boston and all those affected by today's tragedy.

The game was a highly anticipated meeting between division rivals, as Boston chased the Montreal Canadiens for the Northeast Division lead and the Senators attempted to solidify their hold on a playoff spot.

The NHL regular season is scheduled to end on April 27. Boston and Ottawa have two mutual open dates before then, on April 24 and on April 26. If either date is used, the Bruins would play three consecutive nights. Keep in mind the Celtics are also a playoff team in the NBA.
