The Craziest Thing Joel McHale Has Ever Done on a Dare

Joel McHale does not recommend eating an entire bowl of wasabi.

When he did it on a dare — not as a kid, but in his late 30s, mind you — he somehow managed to keep it down. But just barely, he tells omg! in an interview.

This summer, the comedian is hanging out with '80s and '90s stars including "Fresh Prince of Bel Air's" Alfonso Ribeiro, as the celebs take on dares that Twitter users have suggested as part of the Klondike Celebrity Challenge.

However, the "Community" star will definitely be better dressed on his throwback adventures than he was in the actual days of the Carlton Dance, when he was decked out in the uber-cool Mecca jeans and Kurt Cobain-inspired gear.

"I grew up in Seattle in the '90s," McHale explains. "[But] I'm a big dorky white guy. So my grunge outfits were not the greatest. I was into it, but people were like 'meh, ok." Being in Seattle, there was also a lot of plaid."

McHale, who's since become a sitcom star and host of the E! clip show "The Soup," is very into wardrobe. No, seriously.

"I was very lucky being cast as Jeff Winger [on 'Community'], because I do love clothes," says McHale, referring to the former lawyer he plays on his NBC show. "He's very fashionable, but I guess I'm told that too on the red carpet, where I'll wear something more fashion forward."

"I would say our styles are similar," he shares. "The biggest difference between me and Jeff is our skin tone, because he spray tans. And Sabrina Rosen, who is the costumer on 'Community' has great taste. I'm always very happy with what she chooses, and she's tremendous. And Jose Camilo, he is the E! stylist and he picks out all my suits. I get very concerned about them, and he's got impeccable taste."

Of course, McHale wears shirts more often than his character Jeff, who's been known to show off his fit physique.

"I've stayed in better shape over the last few years because Jeff Winger is a guy who is very vain. I had to take my shirt off a lot of times. So that's what I call the new diet that I've created," McHale jokes. "it's called the 'You're going to be naked on camera in two weeks, and you'd better get in shape for it.'"

Now, the actor is bulking up for a horror movie called "Beware the Night," which is directed by Scott Derrickson, whose credits include family un-friendly flicks such as "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" and challenging McHale to eat that wasabi.

"For the first time in a long time, I'm going to the gym all the time," the 41-year-old says. "Every day … I feel like I have to look a certain way, and the movie's with Eric Bana and he's in terrific shape, so I have to step it up."

McHale's movie, scheduled for 2015, is just one more job. He still plans to host "The Soup," where he often makes fun of Kim Kardashian (whose shows also air on E!) and other reality stars, whom he considers fair game for comedy.

"We try to do a couple things [with the show], which is — more so than anything — make people laugh, and second, we do kind of a social commentary on the state of television," says McHale, who's been married to . "Some reality shows are really sad and we don't want to pile on there. With the Kardashians, they're some of the most famous people in the world now. They are constantly in the spotlight, and so they will constantly be commented on. There are stories about them every day, even if it's not a story. And they love it. This is what they signed up for. They keep signing the contracts, so they want the publicity. It all feeds itself."

He’ll also return for the fifth season of "Community," when series creator Dan Harmon will be back at the helm as showrunner after he was fired by the network and replaced last season. Harmon wrote on Twitter last month that McHale is to thank for bringing him back, but the actor refuses to take all the credit.

"It wasn't all me or anything," he insists. "Dan Harmon is the person that created that show. It all comes from his brain. I think the person to make that show is him. I am just glad that he wanted to do it, but huge credit needs to be given to NBC and to Sony working for him coming back. And for that I am deeply thankful to them. It was a group effort."

McHale will be back with Harmon and the Greendale Community College gang on "Community" later this year.
